Basic/Beginners Mixing Concepts – Reverbs

Posted: January 18, 2011 in Mixing, Videos

ok here is a real nice part – Reverb.

reverb is a strongly psycho-acoustic related subject, and I advise you to read about reverb everywhere you can, until you find the explanation that suits you best.

on this tutorial I will just use reverb to move some parts to the background or giving it more space.

more advanced explanation on reverbs will come soon, because you have to know all of the reverb duties in the mix, in order to use it the right way :

1. reverb can color a mix.

2. reverb can help with the masking effect – the masking effect means that one instrument is making other instrument disappear .

3. reverb helps widening the stereo image of an instrument.

4. reverb can make some of the instruments weigh less.

5. reverb can make the mix/sound smoother.

6. reverb can feel empty places where the music stops with continuity of a sound we already know.

7. reverb can be used to lengthen a note.

8. special FX.

so as you see, reverb is not just one million reflections from the wall… well they are, but in music they have far more jobs they can do.

something I would like you to notice about yourself as you progress to a professional level :

the more advance you get, the less reverb you will like to use.

at first we like channeling a lot of reverb into the mix, but then we just notice that it can make the mix too blurry sometimes.

Ok, now for an issue that bothers a lot of musicians on the start of their journey into mixing,

not all the reverbs out there can give you depth!!!

this is important for those who want to master mixing.

don’t give credit from first hearing a reverb alone, compare it, duplicate instrument give each of the duplicates different reverbs, and compare what you are hearing,

usually the reverb which make you ears believe there is more depth will be better used.

if you goal is to use a specific reverb because its color, timbre or shape or whatever 🙂 USE IT!

in mixing we try to bring more quality, but we want to bring fresh colors as well, always remember that, and try new things, sometimes the most not logical act can bring amazing results.

follow your ears always, they are the only, and I mean THE ONLY ones that really know what’s need to be done.

imagine how a sound should sound, and use your knowledge to achieve it.

in the past there where not so many reverbs on the market so engineers tried to use the reverbs they had, to achieve the best results,

the interesting point is, that today we can use as many reverbs as our CPU allows us, use it, use number of reverbs and even some of them from different companies (means different algorithms), adjust them to fit your song and enjoy the flavor of depth they can add.

as you can see there are so many parameters to adjust that a beginner can get lost quickly,

a good way to adjust compressors is to use the presets that comes with the VST, and when you hear something that fits adjusting the MIX parameter.

I know it is a fast way to work with reverbs that way, but after you use it couple of times, read more the about reverb parameters and gather more knowledge,

because pro engineers can make a reverb fit so accurately that you won’t like the song without it,

this can be done only with the appropriate knowledge.
